8th Annual Richard McKinnon Golf Tournament

The 8th Annual Richard McKinnon Golf Tournament was held at El Prado Golf Course on Sunday, May 4.

Overall there were 64 players who came to participate in the tournament named in honor of the founder of System 1 Interiors, Richard McKinnon.  Richard McKinnon loved playing at El Prado as he had a hole in one on hole #7 on Chino Creek.

This year, family and friends came out to celebrate a great day out on the course and headed back to Richard’s Uncle’s home to conclude the festivities.  All in all it was a great day and a fantastic outing for the McKinnon family and System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal.

Kelly Peters Reviews System 1 Acoustic Ceiling Removal on Angie’s List

We don’t share all of the wonderful reviews we get from our satisfied customers, but we loved this review from Kelly Peters so much we wanted to share it with you.

Reviews like this capture exactly what we try to do at System 1. Give you exactly what you pay for, and have total clarity prior to the start of the project.

“I had contacted 4 contractors regarding this job. This company was the only one that insisted on seeing the property before providing a quote. I scheduled an initial consult, but almost cancelled because I had pretty much decided on another contractor. SO GLAD I kept the appointment!

Richard arrived within the time frame we agreed on; he called me about 10 min prior to his arrival to let me know he was on his way. He was very nice, very professional, had samples to show me textures and colors. He reviewed the first room I mentioned during the first point of contact (over the telephone), then I showed him the other jobs and asked about feasibility. Richard gave me the best quote by far. Richard included 2 rooms in the price I was quoted for one room by other companies. Richard was upfront and said that the quote for painting may not be as competitive if we had another painter that we used (we don’t), but to me it was perfectly reasonable. Richard explained the whole process in detail. I was happy with the quote, and was ready to schedule service. They were able to begin the very next day.

Pedro arrived on-time, at 7:40 am the next morning. He was very friendly and very helpful. He completed the entire job by 3 pm (maybe sooner). The place was very clean when he left, and the ceilings were super smooth! We were very happy with the result, and he did a great job cleaning up the poor patch job in the dining room. At the end of the day, I gave Pedro a check for the cost of just the plastering.
Brian came by a few days later to paint; also arrived on time at 7:40 am. As expected, Brian was also very friendly and very clean. I’m very happy we decided to have someone complete this step, because the ceilings look great; professional quality and clean lines. We had a difficult time matching the ceiling paint in the dining room. Brian even went out to buy more paint that matched better (no extra cost!). He also replaced the light fixtures. At the end of the day, I gave him a check for the cost of the painting. The point I’m trying to make here is that I paid exactly what I was quoted at the beginning; no surprise costs. Brian even offered to leave the extra ceiling paint with us!

I am so, so happy with this company. From the point of initial contact, to project completion, everything went smoothly. Excellent communication, very professional individuals, people taking pride in their work. We will gladly hire them for any job, and I will be the first to recommend them to anyone looking to re-do their ceilings. I wish these guys did more (like fixing appliances) because I would hire them for everything. This experience made me happy that I renewed my Angie’s List membership.”

– Kelly Peters (Torrance)

Denise Kallel Reviews System 1 Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Venice

Thank you Denise Kallel from Venice for your A rating on Angie’s List.  Love hearing feedback like this from our customers!

“This was a great experience!  I have wanted to have this done for several years, but dreaded the mess that I believed would be associated with it.  I found System 1 on Angies’s List & went with them because of their great reviews.

Richard, one of the owners of this family business, came out right on time to do a walk-through to give me details on what the process would be, & he made suggestions as to how many recessed lights should be placed & where.  Since I’m not a fan of artificial lighting, we discussed how many dimmers should be placed.  Richard also advised me as to what items should be removed from each room, but I was so surprised at how much didn’t need to be!  That was a huge relief to me, as it was a lot less work than I had assumed there would be.

On the first day, the crew arrived exactly on time.  They immediately began covering the house with plastic when I was leaving for work at 8:30.  By 4:15, they called to let me know the job was done!  The ceiling had been scraped, plastered, & all of the lights had been installed.  I left work a little early to check the job & was so thrilled with what I saw!  The electrician phoned me 4 times during the day to discuss placement of the lights with relationship to the dimmers.  Due to joists in the ceiling where he had planned on running several of the lights, the plan had to be altered a bit, but it came out perfect, if not better than originally planned.  I felt so confident with the 2 electricians that I plan to use them in the future for independent work as needed.

The plan was for the painters to come 4 days later in order to give the plaster time to dry, & once again, they arrived exactly on time.  It took the whole day for them to paint the ceilings & the 2 walls, but it came out beautiful.  We discussed color & they went to a local paint store to have the correct paint color made up.

With respect to the price of the whole job, I’m not sure what I was expecting, but all in all it was worth every penny.  I think the painting cost a bit more than my own painter would have cost, and I had the option of using whomever I wanted, but I went with Richard’s painter so that the job would maintain the flow & be completed on time.  No regrets there.

The whole job was a lot less messy than I anticipated.  Most of the clean up was after the painters finished, as they had a few very small areas that needed to be scraped of the leftover acoustic material in the corners, etc.  They even offered to vacuum for me!

Every one of the guys who worked on this job was just wonderful.  They were all so friendly & thoughtful.

I can’t recommend System 1 enough!  This company was fantastic!”

Thank you Denise for the review on Angie’s List!

The Top 5 Reasons to Remove Your Acoustic Ceiling

The Top 5 Reasons to Remove Your Acoustic Ceiling.

#1 – Asthetics – The biggest reason to get rid of acoustic ceilings is that they just look terrible. Most people do not like the way popcorn ceilings look. In fact, this style is so disliked that in many cases it can bring down the value of a home, or even turn people away from buying it. This is especially true in more “trendy” cities or neighborhoods. Over the years, the ceiling will also become dusty and acquire stains which cannot be removed unless the entire ceiling is redone. Because the texture is difficult to paint over, some homes have color walls with white ceilings, which only emphasizes the ugliness of it. And if the owners do decide to paint, the fragile nature of the material limits the number of layers that can be coated on. Too much thick paint can weigh down the ceiling and cause parts of it to fall. The simple solution for a more versatile ceiling is to scrape off the surface of the popcorn ceiling and give it a smooth finish. This will give it a more appealing look that can more easily be changed according to taste.

#2 – Health – These types of ceilings are very dirty and dusty. Over years acoustic ceilings collect dust and dirt and there is no way to really clean it. Painting over it doesn’t clean it either, it helps trap dirt in and it starts building more and ruins the ceiling. The dust that collects can be inhaled by the inhabitants, causing health problems. Because the material these ceilings are made from is very fragile, every time it is disturbed, small particles are released into the air. This is not only a health threat, but can get your floors dirty as well. The only way to clean acoustic ceilings is to remove them and then you’re replacing it with something that’s not going to collect dust. So you’re taking a porous surface and turning it into a smooth, cleanable surface.

#3 – Allergies – Allergies go down substantially once the acoustic ceiling has been removed. Everything that you’ve been allergic to gets caught up in the acoustic and if you have allergens in your ceiling you can’t get away from it. Dust mites is the most common trigger of allergies, and it tends to get stuck in the nooks and crannies of the ceiling. Dusting or vacuuming can help, but is rarely completely efficient. And often times when attempting to clean, the surface is disturbed and particles are released into the air making matters worse. With a flat surface, you can rest easily knowing that allergens have one less place to hide.

#4 – Smells – Acoustic ceilings trap in smells were created because they absorb sound. Unfortunately, they also absorb smells. This can be particularly problematic in the kitchen where the ceiling is frequently exposed to an array of strong odors from cooking. Smoke and steam deliver the smells straight to the ceiling where it becomes trapped for a long time. Another big problem comes from people who smoke indoors. This not only gives the ceiling a disturbing smell, but an ugly yellow tint as well. Once smells get trapped there is really no way to get rid of them, except to get rid of the entire ceiling completely and give it a fresh finish.

#5 – Out Dated – Popcorn ceilings were popular in the 60’s and 70’s because of their noise reduction properties. But the truth is soft carpets and solid doors are much more effective, especially in single floor homes. Realizing this, people began opting for more modern styles.  Since the 80’s, the vast majority of homes do not have popcorn ceilings. The stippled effect can look especially out of place if a home has had other renovations.
